The evening will open with Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Second Piano Concerto. Although this work has never achieved the same popularity as the First Piano Concerto, it is equal to it in terms of its scope, compositional treatment and the power of its musical ideas. Dedicated to the piano virtuoso Nikolai Rubinstein, the concerto was initially met with considerable criticism and only today is its musical impact and beauty beginning to be fully appreciated. This piece will be presented to the Ostrava audience by the American pianist Claire Huangci. She drew attention to herself in 2011, when she became the youngest laureate of the ARD International Music Competition in Munich, and seven years later she won the prestigious Géza Andy Piano Competition in Zurich, Switzerland. Today, this young performer is a regular guest in the most important concert halls around the world.
